So this is a fenestrated capillary.

It must be capillary action.

Sometimes, they call them capillary beds.

And this one we call this a discontinuous, discontinuous capillary

How about wet adhesion? Or capillary adhesion?

This is our second type of capillary.

These pores are all over the capillary.

So you have a capillary that's maybe running right along the surface.

So basically what you're doing is, you're basically completely avoiding this capillary bed, by clamping down on these pre capillary sphincters.

Now, the first vessels, this tiny little vessel over here, it actually is not a capillary, eventhough we would assume it's a capillary, 'cause it's coming after the arteriola, we call it a metarteriole, a metarteriole .

Capillary electrophoresis separations can have several hundred thousand theoretical plates.

So let me show you the third type of capillary.

To introduce the sample, the capillary inlet is placed into a vial containing the sample.

In these systems, a section of the capillary itself is used as the detection cell.

We worked with a theme, which is, you've got macrophages that are streaming down a capillary, and they're touching the surface of the capillary wall, and they're picking up information from cells that are on the capillary wall, and they are given this information that there's an inflammation somewhere outside, where they can't see and sense.

And you might be thinking there's gotta be one more vessel type and there is and that's the capillary. So let me draw the capillary, so I'll do that over here.

And another name for it, discontinuous capillary, is, sometimes they call it sinusoids

And these pre capillary sphincters, what they do is they basically squeeze down.

This law is valid if the tube radius is smaller than the capillary length.

And so this by definition then, not a true capillary, because it has some smooth muscle in the wall.

So this red blood cell has moved into the capillary right by this thigh cell.

So when we use the word true capillary , we're really trying to distinguish form that metarteriole.

What the body does this is the nifty concept is that there're these pre capillary sphincters.

The system's main components are a sample vial, source and destination vials, a capillary, electrodes, a high voltage power supply, a detector, and a data output and handling device.

It's capillary action and transpiration pulls water up, a drop at a time, pulling it, releasing it from a leaf and pulling it up through the roots.

And this third capillary bed, may be going down to your foot. So you have blood in your foot.

So really every opportunity for things to get out of the capillary is available in those discontinuous or sinusoid capillaries

I will show how the capillary action works, how it feeds, I'll be able to get all the cells inside that stem.

So that capillary looks actually quite different as you can see from the other things that we've drawn the veins and arteries.

So it's kind of neat use of smooth muscle, to control even at the capillary bed level, where the blood is flowing.

This is its membrane right here, super thin, almost one cell thick. And then you have a capillary running right next to it. Let me do that in a neutral color.

And you know of course in real life you don't have three such a capillary beds, which is what I'm drawing here, but really of thousands and thousands, right?

So we often talk about capillary beds, but I thought that it would be fun to get really up close and really get a good understanding of how these things work.

And if they do, let's say we do not want blood to come to this capillary bed, we wanna save the blood for something else.

Well, these smooth muscle pre capillary sphincters, they squeeze down, and as the result, you really don't get any blood flow going through these areas.

The orange stem will suck the oil up to the tip on its own, via the act of capillary action, but this is gonna help you light it a little bit easier.

Couple of things you'll notice, you'll see that there are 4 nuclei, so four cells here, making up the part of the capillary we're looking at.

These cells make up the wall of the capillary but behind them so that the blood doesn't actually see this layer, except for at the intercellular cleft, is a layer called the basement membrane.

It's gonna come down let's say, this way, through the arterial, and let's say some of the blood is gonna continue down this way, maybe to another capillary bed.
